about

Sarah Heagy told me this poem of hers was about anger/god. I had fun creating the chords and melody for this. The chord pattern I was hooked on at the time involved F# and E. This gave the verses a darker feel. Another song we did together was “It’s Alright”. It was the same two chords on the verse but I began with E instead of F#. This gave “It’s Alright” a happy bouncy feel. I still wonder what in our brain makes us perceive this difference.

lyrics

Unfortunate, the shadows did cease
As the sun rose above your pampered head
At the feast you sat by the lonely men
Who cried out for their women instead
Is this your soul, your sole masterpiece
This worth a scorned existence, unfortunate
A man laid smiling up at me
Said all he needed that you’d provide
Disappeared with all of the magic
And fought his way to the afterlife
Is this your soul, your sole masterpiece
This worth a scorned existence, unfortunate
When the rains came
You begged me to drown
I reached for your name, without a sound
Is this your soul, your sole masterpiece
This worth a scorned existence, unfortunate

about

Erick Hovey and Friends Fort Dodge, Iowa

Erick Hovey's music is peppered with seasonings of blues, roots rock, jazz, funk, old power trio rock, reggae, and newer folk fusion styles. His lyrical content has not only good humored nods towards classic blues and rock clichés’, but spans the afterlife, and existentialism as well. Sometimes it’s spooky, sometimes it’s raw, spiritual, and sensual. Think Mark Knopfler, JJ Cale, and Peter Green. ... more
