That Kiss Was Poison

from Scribes by Jessica Webb and Erick Hovey

/

about

I was on a diminished chord kick when I showed this idea to Jessica Webb. She pulled out some of her lyrics and got the verse phrasing and melodies. We then found a chorus hook. I like the way it turned out. Short and sweet with building high energy.

lyrics

There's only one man that I ever loved
And I broke his heart cause I had to run
Around the world saw things I needed to learn
Just to find out
That kiss was poison, yeah, yeah
That kiss was poison. Yeah

That kiss was poison
That kiss was poison
That kiss was poison
That kiss was poison

Because in to a trance I would go
For hours and hours my mind was blown
To a paradise land, we were flown
That kiss was poison, yeah, that kiss was poison yeah

That kiss was poison
That kiss was poison
That kiss was poison
That kiss was poison

So with your soft lips
You would whisper our future in the making
Then together our souls would dance so free
Now I’m stuck being haunted
By that spell he put on me, the spell he put on me

That kiss was poison
That kiss was poison
That kiss was poison
That kiss was poison
That kiss was poison
That kiss was poison
That kiss was poison
That kiss was poison

about

Erick Hovey and Friends Fort Dodge, Iowa

Erick Hovey's music is peppered with seasonings of blues, roots rock, jazz, funk, old power trio rock, reggae, and newer folk fusion styles. His lyrical content has not only good humored nods towards classic blues and rock clichés’, but spans the afterlife, and existentialism as well. Sometimes it’s spooky, sometimes it’s raw, spiritual, and sensual. Think Mark Knopfler, JJ Cale, and Peter Green. ... more
