about

Another story meets a groove, a groove I made up when I was 13 years old. Once I pulled it from the memory banks and laid it down it made a nice pairing to Joe’s story about…well better ask him. I like the way this ends.

lyrics

I was just talking on the phone, on the phone, what, maybe I was being too loud
Maybe I was speaking too loud on the phone, I might have been shouting on the phone
If I can’t hear you, I assume you can’t hear me, what, maybe I was being too loud
I’m shouting to get through on the phone, what, I’m talking too loud on the phone
I might have been shouting on the phone, what, If I can’t hear you, I assume you can’t hear me
My voice got very loud on the phone, what, I couldn’t hear you on the phone
I’m shouting to get through on the phone, I couldn’t hear that I was losing my hearing
What, I’m shouting to get through on the phone, I started talking too loud
Now I just talk too loud, talking too loud on the phone, my voice got real loud on the phone
What, age are you living in? what, no need for cogitating, I’m planning out my new personhood
The strange the changed, deranged, surfing for mentalists unchanged
Have been added to the guest list, people we want to avoid
The strange to blame right now seems a bit too obvious
Water cannons that never missed even children just picking flowers
And finally why a typewriter
Because this document exists now only in two places
On the paper of the single page and on the black ribbon of ink
It was a call for pataphysics for the masses, I called and asked the metaphysics
If they minded if we borrowed their universes, they never called back
Which lead me to correctly assume that a possibility had been missed and therefore
A new stretch in the patauniverse would reveal all
And so I began writing down all the rules of physics, and etiquette, and nouns, and their predicates
And tossing each note in the fire, a funeral unreal reality formed in the smoke
And as it choked all the babies in their beds, we opened the windows letting the ocean in
And were no better off than before, what, oh I said I was just talking on the phone
The strange, the changed, deranged, the strange to blame right now seems a bit too obvious
The strange remain intact but generally motionless, the motions are too remiss
The strange unchanged remote mysterious
They were far too young then suddenly quite old again
If there’s an once of blame I’ll take it
I think we’re headed straight for leather
Understand
It’s either stale or simple, yes, it is, It’s either evil, vile, or charmed
Your either saved as a sinner, yes you are, but no one comes out of it unharmed, huh, gesundheit
And I’m planning out my new personhood, it’s difficult to shut up, it is always difficult to shut up
Which ruins relationships, no need for cogitating, and leads to bad spelling
I’m planning out my own
Kafkas
I bought a guaranteed personality, it comes with a television, I’m smarmy and smart
I’m light and I’m dark, I raise pinot noir on vacation, I make Walter Benjamin illuminations
I’m quick as a cat and I see in the dark and I don’t need no ammunition

about

Erick Hovey and Friends Fort Dodge, Iowa

Erick Hovey's music is peppered with seasonings of blues, roots rock, jazz, funk, old power trio rock, reggae, and newer folk fusion styles. His lyrical content has not only good humored nods towards classic blues and rock clichés’, but spans the afterlife, and existentialism as well. Sometimes it’s spooky, sometimes it’s raw, spiritual, and sensual. Think Mark Knopfler, JJ Cale, and Peter Green. ... more
