about

This song came about as a result of a challenge issued by Shadric Smith who was conducting a songwriter’s workshop at the local music store he managed. The theme was to be “New Moon” as that was what was happening in the sky at the time. Sarah and I decided to team up on the project and when I read through her poem I heard country swing. I had an old 9 volt roll out keyboard that was shorting out but the preprogrammed beats unit still worked. I found a swing beat and simultaneously recorded that, the vocal, and rhythm guitar using a Tascam DR-40 field recorder. This was the basic track that I imported to pro tools and built the song from. As you can imagine it had a low fi retro sound so I called my audiophile friend Herb Dreasler to ask about needle on vinyl sounds. He promptly sent me recordings he had made of needle sounds dropping onto the vinyl and lifting off. That framed up the song and I stuck a fork in it..

lyrics

In the shadow of the night
The words and wine
They flow by the crimes of this tired mind
Crawl to the dream
We can’t remember
New moon spirit me away

New moon, same old ways
Down on my knees, beggin’ you to stay

I’ve seen the whisper
The reflection of the day
Bound to the carriage
Of another charade
Stars arise, I dance despite
New moon, I want to see your light

New moon, same old ways
Go on, keep your light and stay
New moon, same old ways
Down on your knees, till the break of day

Though I’ll never forget
The murmur of the trees
A strange habitat
A vast infinity
Bold lines, to carry awry
New moon, take your light and fly

New moon, same old ways
Shine on me another day
New moon, same old ways
Down on your knees till the break of day
Down on your knees till the break of day

about

Erick Hovey and Friends Fort Dodge, Iowa

Erick Hovey's music is peppered with seasonings of blues, roots rock, jazz, funk, old power trio rock, reggae, and newer folk fusion styles. His lyrical content has not only good humored nods towards classic blues and rock clichés’, but spans the afterlife, and existentialism as well. Sometimes it’s spooky, sometimes it’s raw, spiritual, and sensual. Think Mark Knopfler, JJ Cale, and Peter Green. ... more
