They say write about what you know, so I created a song about spring planting on the farm in Iowa. Featured towards the end of the song is Hannah Moqueda reading her poem “Small Crumbling Towns”.
Erick Hovey
Here is Hannah’s poem:
Clouds like cotton balls
In a baby blue sky
The sun touches down to rolling green fields
Row by row intersected by
The roads I’m traveling
And small crumbling towns that feel like home
lyrics
The rooster crows, the garden calls, sharpen the hoes, mend the overalls
Cause it’s coming, morning on the farm
Check the weather, check the oil too, fuel yourself up and the tractor too
Cause the scare balls rising, on the farm
In Iowa
You head on out, coffee in your hand, pull in the field and there’s somthin to mend already, on the farm
You fix it up nice and try it again, pull up the markets, your gonna bust the bin, this time
In Iowa, In Iowa
By morning call your behind the eight ball, just put it in the ground, might reap it in the fall
Or winter, or next spring
Just about noon, can’t take a break, weather windows closing, don’t tempt fate
Cause mother nature, wins
In Iowa, In Iowa
Crops spiking through every seed tries, its leafin out, you know it’s on the rise
A frost comes along, everything dies, but it still bounces back cause it wants to be alive
In Iowa, In Iowa
Every farmer feeds about a hundred sixty five, folks go hungry if they don’t try
On the farm, In Iowa
In Iowa, In Iowa, In Iowa, In Iowa
Clouds like cotton balls
In a baby blue sky
The sun touches down to rolling green fields
Row by row intersected by
The roads I’m traveling
And small crumbling towns that feel like home
Six oclock we’re playin in the dirt now

Erick Hovey's music is peppered with seasonings of blues, roots rock, jazz, funk, old power trio rock, reggae, and newer
folk fusion styles. His lyrical content has not only good humored nods towards classic blues and rock clichés’, but spans the afterlife, and existentialism as well. Sometimes it’s spooky, sometimes it’s raw, spiritual, and sensual. Think Mark Knopfler, JJ Cale, and Peter Green....more
