Flap Your Jacks

from Scribes by Jessica Webb and Erick Hovey

/

about

It was another late-night session/party with Jdub and Joe. I was playing a groove on an old Kay acoustic guitar that Herb Dreasler had lent me, and Jessica and Joe were brainstorming words. I hit the field recorder record button and captured Joe chanting “don’t you flap your jacks at me” Later I started a protools session with the guitar lick, at what felt like a hypnotic tempo. I then added two over lapping chants “You flap your jacks at me” and Don’t you flap your jacks at me”. A few days later Jessica sang some tracks telling her story of adventure in an ice-cream van in the hills of NC. We were all pleased with the results.

lyrics

When your young and your bold and the world you have to explore
Buy an ice cream van, bring it home get out the hose
Spray paint the side of the wall
And put a misfits flag in the window lets ride, lets ride
Don’t know where we’re gonna go, not yet too soon, let this bitch roll
Are you getting tired of driving, better pull over in a hurry lets go
Turn on the channel right or let it roll, time to go, no particular place to go
Then we breakdown, call it a night get off the road, get off the road
Stay and there’s a knock at the door, my name is Hippy Tommy and I’m here to help
Take you up to my home, we gotta pick up a hippy on the way home
And up the mountain we did go, your lookin over I’m looking low
Up to the top we see the locals, theres broke down buses and people galore
Hippy Tom, Hippy Tom, The nicest people you’ll meet
After a while we had to hit the road
When Rainbow shook my hand and said lets go
Got up the hill and in the town
Gave me a song

about

Erick Hovey and Friends Fort Dodge, Iowa

Erick Hovey's music is peppered with seasonings of blues, roots rock, jazz, funk, old power trio rock, reggae, and newer folk fusion styles. His lyrical content has not only good humored nods towards classic blues and rock clichés’, but spans the afterlife, and existentialism as well. Sometimes it’s spooky, sometimes it’s raw, spiritual, and sensual. Think Mark Knopfler, JJ Cale, and Peter Green. ... more
